400,000 firearms are stolen from individual owners every year.THE PROBLEM

Page 5

THE IMPACTGun theft is one of the top sources of guns used in crime in the US.Police departments that closely track the role of stolen guns in crime find that between 1530% of firearms they recover off the streets have been reported stolen. One example: in 2019, six Alabama police officers were killed in the line of duty. Five of them were killed with a stolen firearm.https://www.tuscaloosanew s.com/Five of the six slain officers were killed with stolen guns, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. “None of the guns were in the hands of people who should have had them. And that’s what gun owners want to prevent. I’m a gun owner, too. Don’t let your guns become crime guns,” David Hyche, the ATF special agent in charge in Alabama, told news outlets Monday.SOURCE https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/news/20191226/number-of-police-deaths-in-alabama-rise-in-2019

Protect What Protects You is a comprehensive campaign to equip gun owners to prevent crime and save lives by protecting their firearms from theft and empowering others to do the same.

Page 8

OUR APPROACHProtect What Protects YouWe create tools and resources that provide practical information on how to prevent theft, focusing first on one of the most common and easily preventable types of gun theft: theft from vehicles. We partner with chapter-based gun owner groups, instructors, retailers, ranges, and others to raise awareness through training, social media, and community engagement.
